1. Alien (1979, Ridley Scott) is a classic horror/science fiction cross over.  When you're trapped in space with a monster and can't get out, you have to fight!  Sigourney Weaver is great, and the designs, based on the work of Swiss artist H. R. Giger are just the freakiest ever.

2.  Silence of the Lambs (1991, Jonathan Demme).  Not just a great horror movie, but one of the best made movies of all time: script, cast, and direction are all excellent.  Jodie Foster is brilliant as Clarisse and Anthony Hopkins is simply chilling as Hannibal Lecter.  It's almost a pity he overshadows Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill who is as creepy as they come.

3. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick).  Maybe not one to watch while you're shut up with your family.  Kubrick's take on the Stephen King tale is visually stunning and terrifying, with the great Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and a shrieking Shelly Duvall as his hapless wife.  Some of the best designed film-making in any genre.
