English 10 Work for 5/11-5/22
I'm sure many of us felt like we would never get here, but we are ready to get going on wrapping up our projects! To make it as simple as possible, work your way through the checklist below. The expectations is that you will have a draft ready to share by 5/22, so in about two weeks. There will be a peer share, then a copy will come to me. Because we are close to the end of the year it's very important that you stick to deadlines!
1. Complete ten pages of written material on your topic. This should already be done. If it isn't, get going!
2. Watch the Screencast below on Transitions.
3. Organize your pages into the best order, and create transitions between the sections. Your final paper should not be a collection of chapters. it should transition smoothly from one idea to the next. Think about what the best logical order is, and put the sections together in that order, then write transitions to connect the sections. These might be a single sentence, or they might be short paragraphs of their own. Always ask yourself: is this transition clear to anyone who might read this, especially someone who is unfamiliar with my topic?
4.Watch the screencast below on Introductions.
5. Write a one page Introduction to your paper. Don't just make your intro a sentence, it needs to be at least a full, healthy paragraph, Even better, it could be two: the first can be a hook, and then transition into a second paragraph that lays out your thesis.
6.Watch the screencast below on Conclusions.
7. Write a one page conclusion to your paper. Again, this is not a two sentence recap of your intro! It should be at least a long paragraph or two; the first would sum up major points of the paper, and the second would tie all those ideas in one of the conclusion styles shown in the screencast
8.Watch the screencast on Citations and works cited below.
9. Verify that you have properly cited all works used, and have attached a page of works cited. Yes, you can use EasyBib, but make sure everything is properly formatted on your own- don't trust the computer to do your job for you.

English 10 Work for 5/4-5/9
Happy May to all. Let’s hope it stops raining and warms up! This week is your catch up week, and the one where you should get yourself to page ten of your project. Please make a point of checking school tool to make sure that I have given you credit for all the work you have done up until this point. If I missed something, my apologies! Just email me at mckeebym@apcsd.org and we will get it figured out.
I have made videos about how to develop transitions, write conclusions and develop your introduction. They are above. I would like you to watch them to learn some techniques necessary for the final assembly of your paper which we will begin next week and finish one the course of May. We will also be looking at ways to share our work. My hope was that everyone could build a website, but if tech is tough we’ll consider simpler videos or podcasts as a way of sharing.
Below, see screencasts on transitions, citations, introductions and conclusions. You can find just the powerpoints without my narration on this page.

English 10 Work for 4/20-5/1
I have to start with an apology for posting this at the end of the week! I’ve been grading and sorting assignments while looking at various options to improve on-line learning, and let this week get out of my hands. I think it’s an organizational issue many of us are dealing with, so maybe I’m not alone. Besides, I’ve never had a student ask me for more work! :)
For this week and next, I’m expecting that you will maintain our usual page per week progress on your paper. If you are behind, you need to get caught up this week and next! We are getting close to the end of this writing phase, and will spend May organizing, building transitions, and developing introductions and conclusions. Those last two sections are something that challenges many writers, so they will be valuable discussions! I will be sharing info via screencasts, so you can follow along with notes I provide at your own pace.
Stay healthy, and stay in touch!
English 10 Work for 4/6-4/18
First of all, I hope everyone is doing well! There are two things to do this week and next:
- First, continue work on your project. At this point you should be in the neighborhood of five pages. Maintain your page-a-week rate, and share your progress with me on Friday 4/11 and Friday 4/18. I know that some classes are assigning a lot of work, so if you want to give me two pages at once and then take a break, that is fine- just keep up as best as you can, and email me or come to office hours to chat if you need help.
- Next, you should have finished reading your survival book by now. If not, please do! When done you have a choice of four activities to complete. The expectation for the activity is the equivalent of about two pages of writing.
-A “how-to” survival manual for a situation suggested by your book
For this one, you would create your own survival manual or pamphlet. Look at the skills the characters needed (and maybe didn’t have), then create you own guidebook with info on how to survive. Make sure your content connects with specific ideas or events in the text.
-A portfolio of materials by and/or a diary of a character
Here, you would write in a character’s voice. What are some items they might have in a memory box? Again, make sure your content connects with specific ideas or events in the text.
-An original survival story or selection of poems on a student chosen theme.
Select themes or ideas from your book (tell me what those are) and then create your own tale of survival, or poems on the idea.
-An idea of your own, contact me for approval.
Note: almost any of these could be done in a video format, so if you want to make a video diary or perform your writing, contact me and we can discuss it.
This will be due by Friday 4/18, so you have two weeks.
English 10 Work for 3/30-4/2
- As before, I would like you to complete one more sub-section of your paper. If you have fallen behind, this is a time to catch up! Your next page is due by Friday 4/2.
- Tuesday 3/31 there will be a new question on your book blog. Please add your response by Friday 4/2. Click on your book title below to go to the blog, or use the dropdown under "English 10 Online Learning" in the menu.

English 10 Work for 3/16-3/27
Below are three activities you need to work on over the break. Only one is new.
We hope to be back together by the end of the month, but in the event that our time apart
is extended. I will make sure everyone gets updates via school email, so check that
periodically if you are able. If that is not an option for you, please see me before we
leave today and let me know a contact phone number and I will call you directly to
discuss updates.
Activity 1: Your Project
Projects are well underway, and I want you to maintain our expectation of one
page of writing on a project topic each week. Remember that to get full credit you need
to use and properly cite outside sources. Even if you are writing about a topic on which
you are knowledgeable you should support your expertise with resources interested
readers can look up.
Expectation: Submit one page of writing on March 20 and another on March
27. You may share with me via Google Docs, or email them to me at
mckeebym@apcsd.org
Activity 2: Advocacy
Everyone has shared good progress on their Advocacy activity at this point. We
set a plan to check in on developments in two weeks. Between now and then, complete
and send any letters, social media postings, or direct communications you have planned,
but have not yet completed. You will let me know details of your outcomes in a short,
well-written letter by March 27.
Expectation: Write me a letter of two to three paragraphs that explains how
you used ethos, pathos, and logos to convince others about your topic, and let
me know the outcome. This can be by sharing responses you received, letting
me know number of likes or shares on social media, or any other way that is
appropriate. Please include how you rate your level of success. Whether you
feel like you made a difference or not, explain what worked best and what
you might improve to make a difference in the future. You may share with
me via Google Docs, or email them to me at mckeebym@apcsd.org
Activity 3: Survival Reading
This is the only new material, and hopefully we will have discussed it together in
school on Monday March 16. Our new unit has a theme of survival. This can take a
number of forms, from literal physical survival to the psychological aspects of dire
situations. You have a choice of one of several books for the unit. These include:
Lord of the Flies by William Golding (fiction)
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou (memoir)
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (fiction)
Into Thin Air by John Krakauer (non-fiction)
Into the Wild also by John Krakauer (non-fiction)
You job will be to get the book read over the two weeks we are apart. As you read,
maintain a set of reading notes for each chapter. Be sure to include information on not
only content, but also our associated issues of context, connections, construction and
questions. When we return, you will be working on a group activity related to your
book. In the event that our separation is extended I will update you with a solo activity to
complete.
Expectation: Read the entire book of your choice from the list above.
Maintain reading notes for each chapter that cover issues of content, context,
connections, construction, and questions. I will check notes on our return to
school. We will use these readings for an upcoming group project. This may
change to a solo project if our separation is extended.
Reading Blogs
I would like everyone to drop in to our new reading blogs and post a quick response to the prompt there. Click on the title of your book for a direct link, or use the slide out menu that appears when you go to the 'online learning' link to the left of this page.
