Course Information
The APHS Guide to Program Planning describes English 10 this way:
" This course refines reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills. Emphasis is on continued portfolio assessment and composition at a more advanced level. The literature accent is on themes, characterization, and deeper analysis. Research skills will expand student interests and link analysis to non-fiction. Students will study the art of persuasive speech and text, and learn techniques for reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The New York State Learning Standards for English Language Arts will guide instruction."
EngageNY's description of the tenth grade Common Core Curriculum tells us (in part):
"The New York State grade 10 curriculum modules offer a variety of rich texts that engage students in analysis of literary and journalistic nonfiction as well as poetry, drama, and fiction... Working with these texts, students build knowledge, analyze ideas, delineate arguments and develop writing, collaboration, and communication skills."
With careful attention to these expectations, and after close review of the State suggested modules (what we generally call 'units'), I developed the course outline below, including approximate date and sequence, which may be subject to change.
