Watch This!

For our first shared blog, lets follow-up on our films we are watching.  I'd love for everyone to make a suggestion of at least three horror films, with a brief reason for watching them.  I'll get us rolling with some of my choices, in no particular order.  Add your comment by clicking the red comments button above.

1. Alien (1979, Ridley Scott) is a classic horror/science fiction cross over.  When you're trapped in space with a monster and can't get out, you have to fight!  Sigourney Weaver is great, and the designs, based on the work of Swiss artist H. R. Giger are just the freakiest ever.

2.  Silence of the Lambs (1991, Jonathan Demme).  Not just a great horror movie, but one of the best made movies of all time: script, cast, and direction are all excellent.  Jodie Foster is brilliant as Clarisse and Anthony Hopkins is simply chilling as Hannibal Lecter.  It's almost a pity he overshadows Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill who is as creepy as they come.

3. The Shining (1980, Stanley Kubrick).  Maybe not one to watch while you're shut up with your family.  Kubrick's take on the Stephen King tale is visually stunning and terrifying, with the great Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and a shrieking Shelly Duvall as his hapless wife.  Some of the best designed film-making in any genre.

1. Carrie (1976) is a good movie. It is scary, but a little different than your typical scary movie. I would recommend if you want a movie that won't make you jump out of your seat, but will make you think twice.

2. The Purge (2013) is defiantly a movie that will make you jump out of your seat. I watched it and was scared the whole time. It also makes you question who you could trust if something like that was brought to the US.

3. The Den (2013) was a movie that was pretty unpredictable at the end. It definitely gave me the chills and I will most likely never watch it agin! But I would recommend if you are looking for a movie is creepy.

1. Psycho (1960). This one is not as much scary as it is psychologically intense and creepy. If you enjoyed bates motel (the tv series) this will be right up your alley. It has the most iconic shower stabbing scene in history, and it will make you never want to stay at a motel again.
2. Geralds Game (2017). Don’t recommend watching with the family, but If you’re into Stephen king this is perfect for you. This movie will have you cringing the entire time but it’s a really good psychological movie.
3. A Quiet Place (2018). I have a love hate relationship with this movie. I hate horror movies but I love John Krasinski. This movie is practically all closed captions because they use sign language to communicate which makes it even worse when theirs noise. This movie will have you crying by the end.

1. Freaks (1932) This movie shows how different we think of horror movies now than what horror movies were thought of in the 30’s. There is only one truly scary part in this movie, but I think it is a good movie to watch if you want to see something that isn’t necessarily scary because of the actors but more because of the way the movie was made.
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) I found this movie really scary but I thought it was interesting that it was loosely based on a true story, that of Ed Gein. This movie was one of the first of its kind and it changed parts of the horror genre.
3. Poltergeist (1982) This movie doesn’t use many jump scares but is still pretty scary. The one part that I still find very scary is the clown in the little girls room. I think this is a good movie for people who are looking for a horror movie, but don’t want to watch the same cheesy movies about killers or monsters.

1. American Psycho (2000) One of my favorite movies of all time. Starting Christian Bale as the main character of Patrick Bateman, who by day is a wealthy executive, and by night a serial killer. Not the typical jump scare horror film, more of a psychological one that really makes you think.

2. The Babadook (2014) I cannot find many horror movies to scare me as much as this one did. A mom trying to overcome her husbands death alongside dealing with her sons fear of monsters and behavioral problems, she realizes that something sinister really is upon them. The ending is great and allows you to interpret what the Babadook really stands for and why it won’t leave them alone.

3. Us (2019) This was quite the thriller. A family travels to the moms old beach house where she grew up as a kid. They meet some intruders who when removing their masks, each attacker appears as a doppelgänger of themselves. I would definitely recommend this movie if you enjoy mystery and suspense

Get Out
It is a modern horror movie dealing with the topic of black rights and how they have progressed over the years. It is a movie that has a different type of fear to it, that society will someday progress backwards and become worse as time goes on.

Annabelle
This horror movie is about a possessed doll that originated in the house a family is living in. This movie is much more paranormal activity than Get Out, but still gives people a sense of fear in a way that makes them feel powerless.

Scream
Scream is more of a horror comedy, however it still depicts the idea of horror in the mid 1980s, and is a classic horror movie. This movie is worth watching because of its originality.

1.The Polaroid(2019)- This film was just straight up creepy and nail biting all at the same time. It is really unpredictable but at the same time ties together nicely and I liked that a lot.

2.In The Tall Grass(2019)- I loved this movie because of how it twists your brain and also gives you the chills. People get lost in this field of tall grass and struggle to find a way out.

3.The Girl With All The Gifts(2016)- This movie is very relevant in today's world with the Covid-19 pandemic happening and that alone is a great reason to watch it. It takes place in an unstable world that is facing a zombie outbreak so if you like zombie apocalypse movies its good for you too!

^^^All are on Netflix as well :)

1) It (2017)- I thought this movie was hilarious with its gruesome comedy. Great for people who like the funny horror genre.

2) Scary movie (2000)- Classic comedy horror movie where a group of teens are killed off in funny ways with its comedic satirical take of horror movies.

3) In the tall grass (2019)- The plot of this movie makes little sense but still a good horror movie to sit down and be scared.

Halloween (1978) - A great classic with slow-striking suspense and the unique serial killer Michael Myers. It has some great shots and this film was appraised for having a strong female lead, since many other slashers before had spotty depictions of women.

The Evil Dead (1983) - A rather comedic twist on horror. A low-budget film that used unique film techniques, grotesque gore, and an iconic lead character to draw you in.

Sinister (2012) - This movie has a haunting and disturbing concept, and it sticks with you. It draws you in by the mystery (and horror) that slowly unfolds.
